Room Full of Language: Living Room

Happy Thursday!  I hope you are enjoying my Room Full of Language Series and finding yourself even more aware of your surroundings and all the language available to you and your kiddo!  So far, we have gone over my vocabulary lists for the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, and today I’m sharing my list for the living room with you!  Do you have a favorite room in your house or one that you find your family spending most of their time in?  Ours would definitely be the kitchen or the living room!  I think some people even call the “living room” the “family room,” which I find very appropriate because it is often a place of gathering and togetherness for families!

Here is a video of our Deaf Mentor, Susan, teaching us signs for the living room!  Enjoy!

Each word in the list below is a clickable link to an online ASL dictionary (Handspeak or Lifeprint).  Just click the word to see its sign video!  If there is no link, the word may be one that does not have a sign and needs to be fingerspelled.  Do you dread fingerspelling?  Here are some ways to make practicing fun, especially with your kiddo!

Room Full of Language:  Living Room

General room vocabulary:

  • Room
  • Living room – combined sign!  This may be a little confusing, but think of this sign as you “live” in the living room.  You combine the signs for LIVE and ROOM to make LIVING ROOM.
  • Window
  • Door
  • Wall
  • Floor (carpet, wood)
  • LightLampOverhead light – Here’s another great example of how the sign changes depending on the type of light you’re talking about.  There is a general sign for light, which I’ve listed first, and then you can get more descriptive to show whether you’re talking about a lamp, an overhead light, car headlights, etc!
  • Fan – this sign is typically fingerspelled, and then you swirl a “1” to show the circular motion.  However, I wanted to share this awesome video from ASL THAT where he goes on to illustrate and describe other aspects of the fan –  how it hangs from the ceiling, has glass shades with lights coming off of it, the blades extending out, and the pull cord!

Furniture/decorations:

There you have it!  Are there any additional vocabulary words you would add for the living room?  Comment below!  I’d love to add it to the list!  If you are enjoying learning some signs but looking for more ways to learn ASL, check out my post: How can I learn sign language?  I’ve made a list (what can I say, I am a list girl haha!) of ASL learning resources from online ASL dictionaries to classes.  If you want more rooms full of language, here are quick links!  Up next is the porch and some outdoors signs!
